About this activity

Designed by renowned architect and sculpture, Eamon O’ Doherty, the Quincentennial Fountain was erected on Eyre Square in Galway City in 1984 to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the incorporation of Galway City as a borough with mayoral status. Now a protected structure and an iconic focal point in the city centre, the semi-abstract representation of the rustic sails of the structure symbolise the sails of the Claddagh fishing fleet, the Galway hooker boats which are unique to Galway City. The sculpture also reflects the role and importance of the sea in the development of the city and its rich maritime heritage.
